Local SEO Graz: Step-by-step guide

How to become locally visible in Graz and Styria – in Google Maps Pack, in local search and in next-gen AI answers.

13 min read · by Edgar Oganisjan

If your customers are local – beauty studio in Graz, restaurant in Geidorf, tax advisor in Eggenberg – Local SEO is probably your biggest visibility lever. Over 60 % of mobile searches with local intent end in Google Maps Pack, the three entries below the map.

What is Local SEO?

Making your business visible for location-based searches: "web designer Graz", "hairdresser near me", "restaurant Innenstadt Graz". Google ranks based on three main factors:

  1. Relevance – how well does your entry match the query?
  2. Distance – how close is your location to the searcher?
  3. Prominence – how established is your business online (reviews, citations, backlinks)?

Step 1: Set up Google Business Profile completely

  • Claim/create at business.google.com – verify by postcard, phone, video
  • Specific main category – "Nail Salon" not "Beauty Salon"
  • Complete NAP, hours, phone – exactly matching your website
  • Service areas if you serve customers off-premises
  • Description (750 chars) with keywords, naturally
  • High-quality photos – logo, exterior, interior, team, products. 10–15 minimum
  • Services / products / menu – use all available fields
  • Attributes – wheelchair accessible, free WiFi, online appointments
  • Q&A section – seed common questions yourself

Step 2: Build review strategy

  • Actively ask for reviews after each satisfied interaction
  • Direct review link via g.page/r/...
  • Respond to every review within 48 hours – professional, never defensive
  • Realistic frequency: 2–5 reviews per month, not 50 in a week
  • Never buy fake reviews – Google detects, profile gets suspended

Step 3: NAP consistency & local citations

NAP = Name, Address, Phone. Identical writing across every online entry. Important Austrian directories: Herold.at, Yellow.at, FirmenABC.at, WKO Firmen A–Z, Bing Places, Apple Maps Connect, branch-specific platforms.

Tip: Create a NAP master document defining exact spelling for everyone in your team.

Step 4: Location landing pages

If you serve multiple districts or surrounding municipalities, build a landing page per area. For Graz: Innere Stadt, Geidorf, Lend, Gries, Jakomini, Liebenau, Andritz, Eggenberg, Mariatrost, Waltendorf, Puntigam, St. Peter. Plus surrounding: Seiersberg-Pirka, Gratwein-Straßengel, Stattegg, Kalsdorf, Premstätten.

Each page needs unique content – not doorway pages. Local references, directions, audience specifics, testimonials, local images.

Step 5: Local backlinks

  • Sponsoring local clubs, schools, charity initiatives
  • Mentions in local media (Kleine Zeitung, regional online magazines)
  • Partnerships with other local businesses
  • Guest articles on relevant local blogs
  • University and educational institutions – very valuable .ac.at and .at domains

Step 6: LocalBusiness Schema markup

Implement Schema.org structured data on your website. LocalBusiness or specific subclass (HairSalon, Restaurant, BeautySalon, ProfessionalService) is mandatory with correct geo coordinates.

Step 7: Local content

Write content with local angle: "Best brunch cafés in Graz", "Web design trends in Styria", "What does a wedding photographer in Graz cost?". Often ranks with moderate effort and attracts the right local searchers.

How long does Local SEO take?

First Maps Pack effects in 6–12 weeks. Classical organic rankings 3–9 months. Highly competitive terms longer.

Common mistakes

  • Multiple Google Business entries for same location (penalty)
  • P.O. box address instead of physical address
  • Different phone numbers across platforms
  • No response to reviews for weeks
  • Wrong main category (e.g. "Shop" instead of "Hairdresser")

Bottom line

Local SEO is the #1 online channel for most local businesses in 2026 – more important than paid advertising or social media. Not expensive, not super complex if youre systematic. Within 3–6 months youll see measurable results.
